Diesel and Waterboxer engines are so-called liquid-cooled engines where a large system of pipes is designed to transport the coolant.
A hose that is nearing the end of its life can often be recognized by an inflated part, this part is much more flexible than the rest of the hose and is about to burst. Check the condition of the hoses at each service and replace them if cracks have appeared or if they are swollen.
Cracks occur due to dehydration and begin to form at the edges, if this continues until after the clamp, leakage occurs. Without coolant, your engine will heat up quickly, causing serious damage, so don't think too lightly about it and replace any hoses you don't trust in time.
It is also advisable to replace hose clamps, because of corrosion they lose their clamping range, what at first sight may still appear to be a perfect hose clamp is in practice often a hose clamp with too little pre-tension, you can imagine the misery that this causes when a hose clamp comes off spontaneously. Note : Some hoses sometimes need more than one hose clamp, this is exactly according to the Volkswagen specifications, in some cases a larger adjustable hose clamp is recommended to the mechanic than the fixed size spring clamp which is mounted ex works. This may be due to an intermediate modification or for easier installation according to the Volkswagen guidelines.
