The outer tube of the steering column leaves the body through a rubber seal that prevents moisture from entering the interior of your VW. Once your restoration is completed, check the condition of the rubber, if there are any cracks, it is better to replace it. There is nothing so annoying to find out after installation that this rubber is worn out.
At the top of the outer casing there is also a rubber, this rubber is not used to stop humidity but to mount the steering column without vibrations. This is not the case for every year of construction or model, but when applied, this rubber is between the steering column and the suspension bracket.
For the Volkswagen Split Bus, the top rubber is available separately, but by also including the casing, it will not often happen that the casing is so worn out that it needs to be replaced. The cleanliness of a new black painted casing is often the reason why its replacement is desirable.
