In our classic car, the hand brake is mechanically operated with cables.
On the Beetle, Karmann Ghia, type 3 and VW Thing, the cables are mounted on the compensation system on top of the hand brake. The compensation system compensates for force differences between the left and right sides for uniform activation of the brake shoes.
For most Buses after 1960, the compensation system is located under the car, where the adjustment takes place.
It is recommended to check the condition of the cables and the adjustment at each maintenance. If the outer cable is damaged, moisture can penetrate, which will damage the inner cable. It is advisable to replace the cable in such a case.
