Due to frequent use, the locking mechanism wears out; it is possible that the hook can no longer hold the locking bracket and opens spontaneously. If the lock has lost its resilience, you do not need to buy a complete lock for the younger models, the spring is available separately as a spare part, but unfortunately this is not the case for the older models.
It is also advisable to order new locks immediately, if the lock is so worn that it refuses to operate, you can assume that the door lock or striker plates have also had their best time.
In the case of the Split Bus until 1963, there was no difference between a left or right mechanism, it was possible to lock the right door from the inside, whereas with the left door it was only possible from the outside. If you want to be able to lock both doors from the inside, this is also possible by equipping both mechanics with a lock. As we write here, this applies to left-hand drive VW Buses, while for right-hand drive Buses, it is exactly the opposite.
