These metal mounts are equipped with vulcanized rubber to prevent engine vibrations from being transmitted to the bodywork and chassis for optimal comfort.
When the engine tilts, so that, in the worst case scenario, even the car can spontaneously shift from one gear to the other, it is time to examine the gearbox mounts.
Don't think you're the only one with torn rubbers, most of our classic VWs have had this problem, a real old age problem. It is therefore advisable to replace all rubbers during the restoration, the engine must be dismantled, a job you don't want to do right after your first road test. Most garages familiar with our classic Volkswagens also recommend replacing rubbers if, for some reason, the engine has to be removed.
In addition to the standard rubbers, for some models they are also available in urethane, this material makes the connection stronger without having to sacrifice too much comfort.
It is even possible to mount the gearbox without rubber, although this possibility is only suitable for off-road and competition applications where the engine and gearbox must operate optimally in all circumstances, comfort is less important in these cases.
If available, urethane rubbers or a fixed arrangement are listed under the alternatives tab.
